Working Principle of Indoor Drum Brakes


Inboard drum brakes reduce and stop the motion of a vehicle by applying friction. Inboard drum brakes mainly consist of a brake drum, shoe and its piston, brake drum, brake handle, and brake fluid. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the brake fluid is pushed onto the pistons in the brake system. The pistons then move outward, making the shoes contact the brake drum. The brake drum is a cylindrical component mounted on the wheel, and as the wheel turns, the brake drum also rotates.


When the shoes make contact with the brake drum, the friction material installed inside the shoes generates resistance, preventing the brake drum from rotating, thus slowing down or stopping the wheel's rotation. To increase braking force and cooling capacity, brake drums usually have some cooling fins. Throughout this process, the pressure of the brake fluid is transmitted to all the shoes, making them evenly contact the brake drum, ensuring a balanced distribution of braking force.


Inboard drum brakes are widely used in some traditional vehicles, especially on the rear wheels. Inboard drum brakes can handle high loads and high temperatures better, such as during prolonged braking and downhill driving. Additionally, thedrum brake design is relatively simple and maintenance costs are low.


Advantages of Inboard Drum Brakes


High braking force


Compared to disc brakes, inboard drum brakes have stronger braking capability. This is because inboard drum brakes act on the inside of the brake drum, which is a closed cylinder, causing the braking force to continuously act on the inner wall and rapidly decelerate the wheel.


High load capacity


Drum brakesare suitable for heavy-load and high-frequency braking in transportation industries. Some large heavy-duty trucks and heavy construction machinery usually use inboard drum brakes due to their good thermal stability and mechanical strength, which can withstand greater loads.


Low maintenance cost


The brake drums of inboard drum brakes are relatively wear-resistant and generally only require periodic replacement of brake shoes, making maintenance costs relatively low.


Applications of Inboard Drum Brakes


Inboard drum brakes have a wide range of applications, especially in heavy-duty vehicles and construction machinery. Due to their high braking force, they can also be used in some areas requiring instantaneous braking, such as elevators and lifts.
